Jonathan Choti photoJonathan Choti is an associate professor of African languages and cultures in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures (LiLaC) at MSU. He holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from MSU and both an M.A. and B.A. in linguistics from Egerton University in Kenya. Dr. Choti teaches Swahili language courses as well as classes focused on African cultures. His research interests include the morphology and phonology of Bantu languages, foreign language pedagogy, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in scholarship. He serves as the faculty director of the summer education abroad program Sustainable Community Development in Tanzania. He has co-edited a volume on African linguistics and authored three book chapters. Dr. Choti is a former president of the African Language Teachers Association (ALTA) and currently serves as vice president of the Kenya Scholars and Studies Association (KESSA). His professional achievements have been recognized through numerous grants, fellowships, and awards at MSU. These honors include the Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award; the Inspiration Award for Professional Achievement; the MSU Award for Outstanding Service to Education Abroad; the Excellence Award in Interdisciplinary Scholarship; the Mid-Michigan Spartans/Donald F. Koch Quality in Undergraduate Teaching Award; and the Learning Leader Award. Dr. Choti has also been awarded several prestigious fellowships to support his scholarly work, including the CAL Epistemic Justice Fellowship, GenCen Faculty Fellowship, Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship, CAL Inclusive Pedagogy Fellowship, and Lilly Fellowship.
