Paul Schauert is an Assistant Professor in the Center for Integrated Arts & Humanities, where he primarily teaches classes on popular music and social movements. Additionally, he regularly teaches courses on African and African-American music and history – his particular areas of expertise. Previously, he has created and taught courses at MSU on immigration narratives, urban soundscapes, and global cities. For the College of Arts and Letters, he designed and teaches a class on fairytales online in the summers.

He holds a Ph.D. in Folklore and Ethnomusicology from Indiana University (2011), with a minor in African Studies. His primary field research was in West Africa with the Ghana national dance companies. In 2015, he published his book: Staging Ghana (Indiana University Press), which focused on this work. Outside of MSU, Dr. Schauert works closely with several non-profits in Detroit; most notably, the Detroit Sound Conservancy and Spin Inc. (electronic music education). Paul has also released several albums of original material over the last two decades, ranging from afro-jazz to ambient electronica.
